One of the small joys in life is the issuance of bank notes by Scotland's three major clearing banks. It's not quite free banking, but it is better than in the south, where the Bank of England has had a monopoly on note production since 1921.

The Clydesdale Bank - the smallest of the three Scots institutions - has carried an image of King Robert I on its notes (used to be the £1, and now the £20) since 1974. This year marks the 700th anniversary of the enthronement of Scotland's Hero King, and there will be much jollity and celebration this weekend to mark the event. In the meantime - here's that Note:
